SUPERLOCAL - Super Circular Estate completes European grant in international digital congress

The SUPERLOCAL-Super Circular Estate project in Bleijerheide, Kerkrade, received a European grant from the Urban Innovative Actions (UIA) of €4.7 million in 2017 to experiment with the reuse of materials. Material from the flats that were demolished was used for the construction of new homes and the construction of roads in public spaces.

Sections were lifted from apartments of the flat and with them the expo building and the three test houses were realized. New concrete was also made from the concrete from the apartment building. Very sustainable.

"Internationally, there is a lot of interest in the experiments done in Kerkrade. Therefore, everything has been written down very precisely and this can be used again by others. There is the idea that in the future materials for building houses, for example, will become scarce. So reusing materials is very important," said Alderman Tim Weijers (Spatial Planning/Public Space).

An international digital conference "Crossing Boundaries" was held on March 24 and 25, with the conclusion of the UIA grant taking place in the afternoon of March 24. 240 people from some 20 countries joined and were able to listen to the lessons learned by the partners of SUPERLOCAL - Super Circular Estate during the experiments.

Alderman Weijers: "I myself also participated in the discussions during that afternoon and can say that we have achieved a lot in Kerkrade together with all partners. Of course we will continue in the area, but the conclusion of the UIA grant is a first important step."

In the SUPERLOCAL project, as many materials as possible from former high-rise apartment buildings will be used to build new housing and construct the public space. There will be 130 new affordable rental homes, a communal space for residents and neighbors, and a water cycle that collects and purifies rainwater. SUPERLOCAL is a circular building project centered on sustainability and resident participation. Project partners are: HEEMWonen, Municipality of Kerkrade, IBA Parkstad, Dusseldorp, construction companies Jongen, Stadsregio Parkstad Limburg, WML, Waterschapsbedrijf Limburg, Zuyd Hogeschool, Veras, municipality of Landgraaf and municipality of Brunssum.
