Elections, voting in another municipality

Life, travel & papers >> Electing to municipal, provincial, Dutch or European parliament

What is it?

Do you vote in a municipality other than where you live? If so, you need a voter ID card.

In which other municipality can I vote with a voter ID card?

It depends on the election:

  • Provincial elections: in a municipality in the same province.
  • Water board elections: in a municipality in the same water board.
  • House of Representatives elections, European elections or other referendums: in every Dutch municipality.

Note: You cannot apply for a voter ID card in municipal elections.

Voter ID Application

You apply for your voter ID card at the municipality where you are registered. You can do this in two ways: in writing or in person.

Keep your voter ID card safe. You will not get a new pass if you lose your voter ID card.

Written request

  • Complete the application form and send it to the municipality. Do this no later than 5 days before election day.
  • Send your voting card with the application.

Personal request

You can apply for your voter ID card in person at the municipality until no later than 1 day before the election. Do this before noon. Bring the following with you:

  • your valid ID
  • your polling card
