Social Resilience

A project group was started within the municipality of Kerkrade to increase community resilience. Municipalities regularly face emergency situations, such as power outages, natural disasters, polluted drinking water and other crises.

Together with its residents, the municipality wants to increase resilience and self-reliance. A long-term process where the municipality works together with its residents, entrepreneurs, organizations, associations and more to be a resilient Kerkrade.

Who can participate?

  • Citizen panel Municipal pollster Kerkrade (1515 residents)
  • Businesses and social organizations

This is your influence on the plans

To get a picture of the current situation in the municipality of Kerkrade, an initial QuickScan (0 measurement) was conducted on the following two components:

  • The vital infrastructure and essential businesses
  • The current level of resilience within Kerkrade

The outcome of the QuickScan in included in the framework document Social Resilience Kerkrade in order to see the resilience task in the Kerkrade context.

We do this with the results of the interviews

A poll of Kerkrade residents shows that half feel reasonably to well prepared for crisis situations. Half also have at least partially an emergency kit at home, but only 20% have an emergency plan. A significant proportion of residents do not think they can survive longer than 3 days without help.

The development of the resilience program therefore focuses on activation and awareness.

Planning

  1. Completed: Polling resilience -

The citizen panel was asked to fill out a questionnaire through the "Municipality pollster" platform.

  2. Still to do: Dialogue sessions businesses and social organizations

We are starting the dialogue from two specific scenarios: long-term power outages and/or long-term communication/data traffic outages (both of 2 weeks duration). In doing so, we want to start by talking to the most critical companies in Kerkrade, which take care of the most vital processes in our municipality
