We celebrate 80 years of liberation
Tonight we commemorated the evacuation and liberation of Kerkrade 80 years ago during World War II with a wreath laying ceremony. The ceremony took place at 18:30 at the Old Hickory Square, at the monument of the Old Hickory soldier. We reflected on the courage and perseverance of the residents who endured this difficult time.
Mayor Petra Dassen-Housen of the Municipality of Kerkrade laid a wreath together with Mayor Benjamin Fadavian of the Municipality of Herzogenrath.
During the evacuation, thousands of residents were forced to leave their homes and seek shelter elsewhere. Their stories remain an important part of our history.
