Week of Safety

Today kicks off Safety Week with the central theme of digitized crime. Seniors are at greater risk of becoming victims of digital crime, also known as cybercrime. A form of crime that has skyrocketed during the corona period.

For example, you could receive a fake e-mail from your "energy supplier. Asking you to enter your bank account details for a refund of an amount you allegedly overpaid for gas and electricity. Once the link is clicked, malicious parties have access to your bank details or other personal information. Or you may receive a fake email announcing that an employee from your energy supplier is coming by to read your meter. Once inside, the consequences are incalculable.

Therefore, be extra careful and alert if you receive a strange email or letter from, for example, your bank or energy supplier!

In the coming period, the municipality of Kerkrade, together with its partners, will be paying extra attention to digitized crime. The aim is to make residents more resilient against this form of crime. Later this year, for example, we will pay attention to cybercrime on Beleef Kerkrade TV and via local media and our socials.
