Week of Reading and Writing in Kerkrade (Sept. 8 to 15): Join us!
From September 8 to 15 it is the national Week of Reading and Writing. In Kerkrade, together with Mijn Streek Library and Impuls, we are organizing various activities, drawing extra attention to basic skills such as reading, writing, arithmetic and digital skills. In Kerkrade, 1 in 4 adults has difficulty with these basic skills. Also 1 in 4 young people aged 15 has a language deficiency. Young people who drop out of school early are therefore at additional risk of not being able to participate well in society later on. These figures make it clear that attention to basic skills is badly needed.
Why is this important?
Having difficulty with reading, writing or math has major consequences. People are often less self-reliant, less socially active and sometimes less healthy. Those who can read, write and calculate well, have more opportunities. At school, at work and in everyday life. Together with our partners, we help residents improve their basic skills. So everyone gets the chance to develop.
A promising start
This year we are paying extra attention to families and language. This is in line with the Regioplan Basic Skills South Limburg. All children deserve a promising start, in which good language development forms the basis for a healthy, happy and successful life. Parents play an important role in this. They can help their children discover language from an early age (0-6 years). With the family approach, we support parents to create a language-rich environment at home. We give practical tips and also encourage parents to strengthen their own language skills. In this way, together we break the circle of low literacy and build a future full of opportunities for the next generation.
