Another 188 Kerkrade life trees planted

On Saturday, November 20, the planting day of the Levensbomenbos and Levensbomenlaan Holzkuil took place in modified form. 188 deciduous trees were planted by and for Kerkrade residents.

Adopters of the trees were again given the opportunity to plant the trees themselves. A tree tag with a personal message was allowed to be attached to the tree. As proof of adoption, participants also received a tree certificate.

Custom program

Because of the safety and health of those present, this day had a very sober character. Nevertheless, it was decided not to postpone the planting day again. The reasons are the great emotional commitment of the adopters to the Tree of Life forest and the fact that they had already waited far too long for this moment. After all, the planting day had already been postponed for a year because last year it was not possible to organize it in a safe and responsible way. This year, the measures did provide this opportunity, although it meant that the program had to be modified.

An austere but memorable day

Alderman Tim Weijers (Public Space) looks back on this sober, but memorable, day: "It was certainly not a planting day as we had envisioned it," he stresses, "but at least the adopters of the life trees had the opportunity to be present themselves, and that was decisive for us. After all, each of these trees was adopted out of love. Behind each tree is its own unique story. Today was therefore an important moment for the adopters. That they were able to plant their own tree or trees is ultimately what counts."

Growing number of life trees

The idea of a Life Tree Forest came about in late 2017 at the initiative of the City Council.

There are already 390 Life Trees in the Life Tree Forest on the plateau along Parallelweg in Kerkrade. Now in the Holzkuil the 128 trees in the Levensbomenbos and 60 trees in the Levensbomenlaan have been added. In total, Kerkrade now has 578 life trees.

The Levensbomenbos and Levensbomenlaan Kerkrade Holzkuil are part of the Holzkuil area development and will be sustainably maintained. The new Levensbomenbos is located on a former piece of pasture land, behind the grounds of garden center Peschen, near the Haanraderstraat. Levensbomenlaan serves as a connecting route between Eygelshovergracht and Tichelstraat. With the construction of the forest and avenue, the former open land has now been transformed into a beautiful and meaningful piece of nature.

The Life Tree Forest Holzkuil has the character of a tree meadow. Thus, there is no park with the associated amenities. There are Mountain Maples, Sweet Chestnut Trees, Wild Cherry Trees, Winter Limes and Fladder Elms.

From a landscape point of view, there is one type of deciduous tree in the Avenue of Life Tree, namely the Wych elm.
