Work in castle park Erenstein and along Anselderbeek
The Limburg Landscape Foundation and the municipality of Kerkrade will soon start work in Castle Park Erenstein and along the Anselderbeek. The work will last approximately one week. During this period several roads and paths will be closed for short or longer periods of time to prevent unsafe situations.
The work is important for ensuring visitor safety. The municipality of Kerkrade and the Limburgs Landschap Foundation are responsible for this. The management of the forest and nature area of Erenstein Castle Park and the Anstelerbeek valley is done jointly by the two parties. The area is highly valued on many aspects such as: ecology, recreation and cultural history. The history of the area provides special natural values with many old trees.
Special species
The trees provide scenic, ecological and recreational values to the area. It is also habitat for a number of unusual beetle species, such as the vermilion beetle, scarlet beetle and flying deer. The juchtleerkever is a very rare species currently found in the Netherlands, only in the municipality of Kerkrade. The decaying condition of old thick trees, which are coming to the end of their natural life, provide the perfect habitat for the scarlet beetle. However, the condition of these trees also poses a risk to visitor safety due to fall and breakage hazards.
Collaboration with experts
In close consultation with "Foundation EIS Knowledge Center for Insects" and the Province of Limburg, a suitable working method has been established that will allow assurance of safety in the area with minimal damage to the habitat of the rare beetle species.
