Wonen Zuid and Gemeente Kerkrade to work on Schoutstraat and Toupsbergstraat: 28 new-build homes

Housing corporation Wonen Zuid and the Municipality of Kerkrade are going to work together in the old part of Schoutstraat and Toupsbergstraat in Chevremont. By demolishing old houses and building new ones, they want to improve the living environment.

On Friday, March 3, Tim WeijersAlderman Wonen of the municipality of Kerkrade) and Ramon Testroote (director of Wonen Zuid) put their signatures under the agreements the two parties made together about the area. Wonen Zuid and the municipality had already let people living in the neighborhood know about the plans last year.

Housing South will demolish old homes

In Schoutstraat and Toupsbergstraat there are 26 social housing units owned by Wonen Zuid. These houses are old and their quality is no longer good enough. Therefore Wonen Zuid will demolish the houses. They expect to start with this at the end of this year. Then Wonen Zuid will build a total of 28 low-energy houses back on the site of the old social housing.

Life-sustaining housing and single-family homes will be returned to the same site

In the place of the 18 homes on Schoutstraat, 18 life-proof homes will be built. These are houses where residents can continue to live even if they have to use a walker or a wheelchair, for example. The 8 houses in the Toupsbergstraat will be replaced by 10 new single-family houses.

It will be a beautiful neighborhood where you can live comfortably

The new houses will fit in well with the rest of the houses in the streets. By replacing the old social housing with new houses, Wonen Zuid and the municipality want to ensure that the streets will look nicer. They also want to make it a neighborhood where people of different ages can live comfortably.

Alderman Weijers: "As a municipality, we want to provide more good housing in Kerkrade. Preferably a mix of types of housing that suit different groups of people. Like singles and families. Or young and older people. We also want these homes to be in an environment where it is nice to live. Wonen Zuid's new homes on Schoutstraat and Toupsbergstraat are a nice example of our housing offensive in practice."
