Moped Driving License

What is it?

You apply for your moped license in person at the municipality.

If you need your moped license quickly, make an urgent application. If you apply for the license before 2 p.m., you can pick it up the next business day. This does cost extra money.

How does it work?

You need a moped license to drive a:

• moped
• scooter
• moped
• moped
• quad
• trike and
• speed-pedelec (bicycle with electric pedal assistance with a speed of up to 45 kilometers per hour)

What to do?

You can take theory exams from 15.5 years old for the moped license. From 16 years of age, you may take driving lessons and take practical exams.

No driving lessons and driving test required

If you have a car license (driving license B) or motorcycle license (driving license A), the moped license (driving license AM) is automatically added to your license.

Moped license lost or stolen

Have you lost or had your driver's license stolen?

• Then first report this online to the RDW. For this you need DigiD.
  Do you not have DigiD? Then report the loss to the municipality.
• Then apply for a new driver's license at the municipality. Bring a color passport photo and valid identification.

What do I need?

• A good-looking passport photo not older than 6 months at the time of application. This passport photo meets the passport photo requirements.
• Cash or a debit card. You pay directly at the time of application.
• When applying for your first moped license: a valid passport or identity card.
• When renewing your moped license: the moped license you already have. If this is no longer valid, please also bring a valid passport or identity card.

You pick up your moped license in person at the municipality. A Make an appointment appointment is not necessary. Do bring your old moped license with you if you have one.

You can apply for your driver's license in three ways.

1. In person at the municipality counter

You make an appointment for this at the municipality. Apply for your (new) driving license at the counter. You pay for the application at the desk. After 5 working days you can collect your license without an appointment.

2. Online application through the municipality's website

You already fill in your details online and pay for the application. You need DigiD for an online application. After your online application, make an appointment and visit the counter in person. Here you sign the application, show your old driving license and submit your passport photograph. Even if your license is lost or stolen. After 5 working days you can pick up your license without an appointment. You cannot make an urgent application online.

3. Directly at the RDW

This is an application without the intervention of the municipality. You go to an RDW approved photo guru. He will take a digital passport photo of you. You place your signature with the photographer. The photographer sends your passport photo and signature securely to the RDW. You receive an e-mail from the RDW for the online application of your driving license at the RDW. After 2 working days you can pick up your driving license at the municipality without an appointment.

Make an urgent request

• Do you need your driver's license quickly? Then make an urgent application.
• A rush application cannot be made with an online application through the municipality's website, nor with the RDW.
• If you request an emergency driver's license in person before 2 p.m. at the front desk, you can pick it up the next business day. This does cost extra money.

Applying for a driver's license based on false information is punishable. (Art. 225 Criminal Code)

In case of an incorrect or false declaration of loss, the new driving license including all categories will be declared invalid. (art. 114 and 224 Road Traffic Act)

When your driver's license is stolen in a burglary or robbery, you do not have to pay an administration fee. The administration fee is in addition to the cost of a new driver's license.  

How long does it take?

• You can pick up your driver's license at the municipality after about a week.
• If you made an urgent application before 2 p.m., you can pick up your driver's license the very next business day.
