Letting pigeons fly out

What is it?

If you want to release your pigeons, keep in mind that pigeons are not always allowed to fly out. This is because in the spring, feral pigeons often cause damage to farmers' fields. Therefore, the municipality may set a period during which you must keep your pigeons inside so that hunters can thin out the number of feral pigeons. This period can last a week, but also, for example, one day a week. The municipality consults with homing pigeon associations about this in advance.

If you want to fledge your pigeons during the same period, you need a waiver from the municipality.

What to do.

You request the waiver from the municipality. Please provide the following information with your application:

  • the date and time(s) when you want your pigeons to fledge
  • the number of pigeons

How long does it take?

You will be notified within 8 weeks whether you will receive the waiver.

Objecting

If you disagree with the municipality's decision, you can object within 6 weeks.

Additional information

In spring, feral pigeons often cause damage to young crops in arable areas. The municipality can set a period during which you must keep your pigeons indoors. This period allows hunters to thin out the feral pigeon population. The period can last a week, but it can also be one day a week, for example. Usually the municipality consults in advance with homing pigeon associations about the period to be set.
