Recognition and Dutch nationality

What is it?

If you have a child together, the father/mother can apply for recognition. If the mother is not Dutch and the father/mother is, recognition affects the child's nationality:

  • If you acknowledge the child before the age of seven, the child will automatically receive the Dutch nationality.
  • Do you acknowledge the child after age 7? You must prove your biological paternity within 1 year. You provide this proof with a DNA test.

What to do?

You acknowledge your child at the municipality.

Call 14 045 for an appointment at the registry office.

How does it work?

You must have the DNA test done by a laboratory that meets the legal requirements. Be sure to have this done within 1 year of recognition.

What does it cost?

Acknowledging your child costs you nothing. However, do keep in mind costs for a transcript or excerpt (you pay this at the time of application) and the cost of DNA testing.

The fee for a transcript or excerpt is €17.10

What should I bring?

To recognize a child and give it Dutch citizenship, you need:

  • A valid ID from both parents;
  • written consent from the biological mother if the child is under 16;
  • written consent from the child himself or herself if the child is 12 years of age or older;
  • results of DNA testing, if the child is older than 7 years.
