Change usage surname

What is it?

If you are married, have become a registered partner or widow or widower or you are divorced, you can have the use of your surname changed by the municipality. You can then choose:

  • only your own surname
  • your partner's last name only
  • your partner's last name followed by your own last name
  • your own last name followed by your partner's last name

Note! This is not the same as changing your own last name because you want another parent's last name or because your last name has a crazy meaning.

How does it work?

  • The last name you choose will be recorded in the Basic Registration of PersonsBRP). This way, other government organizations are also informed and can use the surname you have chosen. You inform other institutions and companies yourself.
  • Your passport, identity card or driver's license always shows your own name. Even if you are married or registered partner. However, you can have your partner's name put on these documents.

You ask the municipality to change the use of your last name. You can do this online or in person at the counter.

What do I need?

  • If you are applying online, you will need your DigiD.
  • If you make your request at the counter, you will need your valid ID.

How long does it take?

  • When applying online, the municipality changes your last name within 10 business days.
  • If you visit in person, the municipality will change your last name immediately.
