What is it?
If you want to place a headstone or memorial plaque on a grave, you need a permit from the municipality. Your gravestone specialist can arrange this for you.
If you want to place a memorial in a public place, you need permission from the road authority. This is often the municipality, but can also be the Department of Public Works, the province or the water board. It is important that the memorial does not endanger traffic safety. For example, you can place a memorial in a public place for a traffic victim or victim of senseless violence.
What to do?
Usually the gravestone specialist will apply for the permit for you. The funeral director may also do this for you. You may also apply for the permit yourself. When applying, please provide the following information:
- the dimensions of the headstone or plaque
- the type of material
- the text
- On which grave you want to place the headstone or memorial plaque
Memorial in a public place
- Ask the municipality who is the road authority for the spot where you want to place the memorial.
- Get permission from the road authority.
