Free public transportation for Kerkrade residents on minimum income
Residents with a minimum income will soon be able to travel for free on Arriva's public transport within all of Limburg. The scheme, in the form of the Dal Vrij Limburg Subscription, makes public transport more accessible for people with a narrow budget. This initiative is a collaboration between the Province of Limburg and the Municipality of Kerkrade, among others. This makes Limburg the first province in the Netherlands where free public transport is available for residents with a minimum income.
What does the scheme entail?
With the Dal Vrij Limburg Abonnement, residents with a minimum income can travel for free during off-peak hours. That means: on weekdays after 9 a.m. and all day on weekends. The subscription is valid on all Arriva buses and trains within Limburg.
Equal opportunity and better accessibility
With this scheme, we as a municipality contribute to more equal opportunities and better accessibility of transportation for residents with a narrow budget. After all, transportation is essential to be able to participate in society. Think of visiting work, school, care institutions or social activities. For people with a minimum income, travel costs are an obstacle. This scheme removes that barrier.
Alderman John Roland: "Everyone should be able to actively participate in society. Accessibility plays an important role in this. By offering free public transportation, we increase opportunities for minimum-income residents at no cost to them."
Good for people and the environment
The scheme also contributes to a more sustainable Kerkrade. By relying on public transportation, we reduce car traffic and emissions.
How does it work?
Eligible residents will soon receive an automatic letter from the municipality with a personal code. With this they can activate their free subscription. In principle, the scheme applies until 2031.
