Legalize signature

What is it?

Do you need to prove that your signature on a document is really yours? Then you can have your signature legalized. You can arrange this with the municipality. The municipality will then certify that the signature is genuine.

Legalizing a signature is often required:

  • On documents to be sent abroad
  • if you give your consent to something, for example, if you are a guarantor for family or friends from abroad
  • If you want to arrange an inheritance abroad

How does it work?

  • Legalization of a signature is something you must do yourself. You cannot have someone else do this for you.
  • The municipality confirms with a stamp that this is the same signature that appears on your passport or identity card. The legalization only proves that your signature is genuine. It says nothing about the content of the document or form.
  • The municipality official checks the signature on the document with the signature on your ID.

The filing fee is €12.50

What to do.

  • You must come in person with the piece you are going to sign.
  • You must sign in front of the official.
  • The official compares it to the signature on your ID.
  • By legalization, the municipality certifies that it is your signature.

What do I need?

  • the document on which you wish to place your signature
  • your valid proof of identity (passport, driver's license, Dutch identity card or foreigner's document)

How long does it take?

Your signature will be legalized immediately. So you will receive the document right away.
