Mayors of South Limburg issue a joint message for May 4
On May 4, 2026, sixteen mayors from South Limburg will jointly deliver a special commemorative message. In a video, they will present a single message reflecting on the meaning of freedom, democracy, and responsibility: then, now, and in the future.
The initiative stems from a shared recognition among mayors that the world around us has become less certain and predictable. International developments are having an increasingly direct impact on the daily lives of residents and, as a result, are also affecting local government.
Mayor of Beek Christine van Basten-Boddin (on behalf of sixteen mayors from South Limburg): “Freedom and democracy cannot be taken for granted. That is precisely why it is important that we, as mayors, not only act in an administrative capacity, but also visibly stand up for the values that underpin our society. In this, we stand together.”
With this joint statement, the mayors emphasize that the values of May 4 Health our continued attention and Health . The video thus serves as a poignant moment of solidarity—a silent alliance in safeguarding what unites us.
The text was written specifically for this occasion and consists of sixteen sections, with each mayor reciting one section. The video will be released simultaneously on Monday, May 4, at around 8:00 p.m. via the channels of the participating municipalities.
The joint commemoration is separate from the local observance of Remembrance Day in individual municipalities. Municipalities retain their own traditions and choices in this regard.
Through this initiative, the mayors emphasize that remembrance is not merely about looking back, but also entails a responsibility for the present: to protect and pass on freedom and democracy, in solidarity with one another.
