Integration course, apply for waiver

What is it?

If you are obliged to integrate, you will receive a letter from DUO stating the date from which you are obliged to integrate.Do you already speak good Dutch? Do you already have a Dutch diploma? Or are you doing an education in Dutch? Then you may be able to get an exemption. This means that you do not have to take one or more exams. You can also apply for an exemption. This means that you do not have to take an exam at all.

How does it work?

Getting a waiver can be done in three ways.

  • You can get an exemption if you have done enough to become civilized. This is called demonstrable effort. You can apply for this exemption six months before your civic integration term ends.
  • Exemption is also possible if you have integrated well enough. For example, you have been living in the Netherlands for 10 years or more, have been working in the Netherlands for 5 years or more and speak the language well.
  • A third reason for exemption may be your medical condition. For example, you are seriously ill or disabled. A doctor will then examine you; you must pay for this examination.

You must apply for the exemption or dispensation yourself at DUO. Via the website for integration you can download the form 'Application for exemption from the obligation to integrate'. The form tells you what you need to do next. You can also contact us by phone via the integration phone 050 5999 600.
