Kerkrade offers temporary educational housing to The Martin Buber in Town Office
Kerkrade's Board of Mayor and Aldermen has taken a decision in principle to temporarily house part of Het Martin Buber's educational activities in the town office at Markt 33. This measure is necessary due to the growth of the school and the lack of space at its current location on Marktstraat.
Starting with the 2026-2027 school year, The Martin Buber will have a third grade, so the current teaching location no longer offers sufficient capacity. Temporary housing in the city office will accommodate this growth until the new school building next to Vie is completed in the spring of 2027.
After careful consideration of several locations, the city office remained as the only suitable option. The second and third floors will accommodate approximately 160 students and their teaching staff from May/June 2026 to spring 2027.
Alderman Education Jo Schlangen: "We want to provide an appropriate place for all students. This temporary solution was carefully chosen and provides the space needed for the educational process to run smoothly."
Alderman Realty, Personnel and Organization Alexander Geers adds: "We realize that this requires flexibility from our employees. That's why we provide good alternatives and remain in dialogue with all involved."
Marij Dings, director The Martin Buber / Director SKOOL: "In view of the final housing by August 2027, this is a very nice solution to secure the connection between the first three years of learning and the teaching teams."
The cost of the temporary facility will be covered from a budget previously made available. The renovation of the second floor of the city office will be postponed until after the departure of the school in order to reduce the pressure on the organization.
The Kerkrade municipality, in close consultation with Het Martin Buber, the internal organization and the works council, will ensure that this temporary solution is carefully worked out.
