Notification of residential and living environment
What is it?
Your residential and living environments consist of places to which everyone has access. Think of squares, roads, parks, playgrounds or sports fields. It is important that these places are safe and tidy. If you believe that something is not right in the public space, you can report it.
How does it work?
Examples of things you can report:
- loose paving stone
- hole in the road
- broken street lights
- damage to lampposts or traffic signs
- unsafe places
- overdue maintenance of public green spaces, such as weeds
- downed branches, fallen trees
- ruined greenery
- litter
- overflowing waste bins
- dead animals along the road or in the water
- odor nuisance
- abandoned bicycles or cars
- unsafe traffic situation
- construction and maintenance of playgrounds
- broken or unsafe playground equipment
- nuisance pests (e.g. rats)
What to do?
You can submit your report of public space to the municipality by telephone during office hours (Monday through Thursday 8:30-17:00 a.m. and Friday from 8:30-12:00 a.m.) by calling the general number 14045.

The municipality takes care of the maintenance of all:
- asphalt, clinker and dirt roads;
- squares;
- footpaths and bicycle lanes;
- overpasses and traffic circles;
- playgrounds;
- traffic lights;
- traffic signs and signals;
- street furniture such as benches;
- traffic measures, such as speed bumps, road narrowing.
For very urgent matters outside office hours, such as acute severe flooding, please call the police number (0900-8844). However, use this number only in real emergencies outside office hours. If necessary, the police control room will call the on-duty on-call officer of the municipality. The on-call officer will in turn take action.
Street Lighting
If the street lighting in your area is not working or is damaged, you can report this directly to SPIE Infratechniek BV. This company performs maintenance on public lighting for the municipality of Kerkrade. As a rule, SPIE Infratechniek BV will repair the malfunction within 10 working days, unless it concerns an underground cable failure; SPIE Infratechniek BV will pass this on to Enexis. Repair of such malfunctions usually takes more time.
Methods:
- Note the number (read from top to bottom) listed on the corresponding light pole.
- Report the street name and light pole number to SPIE by calling 088 -94 50 850, available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (excluding holidays).
- Make the report as complete as possible by indicating what is wrong. For example: lamp is blinking, lamp is not lit, several lamps are not lit, fixture is hanging loose, door of mast has been removed or is hanging loose, light pole has been hit, etc..
- Outside of business hours, you will hear a report text on this number asking you to call back the next business day within business hours.

How long does it take?
The municipality usually handles your report within 5 working days. This does not always mean that the situation will then be resolved. Sometimes more time is needed.
