Monument designation

What is it?

A municipal monument is usually a special building, but it can also be a special bridge or park. A house or building can also become a monument. You can ask the municipality to designate your property as a municipal monument.

How does it work?

  • Whether your building can become a municipal monument depends, for example, on its architectural style and whether special people have lived in it.
  • A municipal monument is different from a national monument. National monuments are designated by the Rijksoverheid .

What to do.

You are asking the municipality to designate your property as a monument. When doing so, please provide the following information:

  • the architect
  • the architectural style
  • the year of construction
  • key previous residents
  • archaeological finds made in or around your property
  • significant historical events that have taken place in or around your property

Submit your request in writing to the Municipal Executive of Kerkrade, Postbus 600, 6460 AP Kerkrade.

Additional information

If you do not want your property to be designated as a municipal monument, file an objection with the municipality. For example, if you live in the same property as the person who made the application to the municipality. Submit your objection within 6 weeks of the announcement of the designation.
