Becoming Dutch by option

What is it?

As a non-Dutchman, there are several ways you can become a Dutch citizen. The easiest way is to become a Dutch citizen by option. You will then submit a declaration to the municipality. On the website of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) you can check whether you meet the Requirements .

What to do?

  • You make a declaration at the municipality that you want to become a Dutch citizen by option.
  • You pay the fee, after you make the statement.
  • You fill out a form saying you want to make the declaration of affiliation. You will make this declaration during the naturalization ceremony. With this you declare that Dutch law also applies to you. Children under the age of 16 do not have to do this.

The municipality checks your declaration. If it is approved, you will receive an invitation to the naturalization ceremony.

Naturalization ceremony

At the naturalization ceremony, you will make the declaration of affiliation. You will also receive confirmation during the ceremony that you have become a Dutch citizen. You are required to attend this ceremony. Was your child 16 years or older when you made the option statement? Then he or she is also required to attend the ceremony. Children under 16 do not have to come with you, but of course they may.

What do I need?

  • Your residence permit
  • Your valid passport or other travel document
  • Your birth certificate
  • Other documents about your personal situation. For example, a marriage certificate or divorce certificate.

Important with foreign documents

  • The municipality must be able to see that foreign documents are genuine. This can be done by legalizing the documents. Ask the municipality in advance if this is necessary.
  • Foreign documents must be in Dutch, English, French or German. If they are not, you must first have the documents translated by a translator certified in the Netherlands.

How long does it take?

You will be notified by the mayor within 13 weeks. The mayor can extend this period once.

  • If you meet all the Requirements , the mayor will confirm your option statement. You will receive an invitation to the naturalization ceremony.
  • If you do not meet the Requirements, you cannot become a Dutch citizen. This decision is contained in a letter. This letter explains why you cannot become a Dutch citizen. You can object to this decision.
