New fire station for Kerkrade

Kerkrade is getting a new barracks. Today, Fire Department Commander Léon Houben and Alderman Alexander Geers ceremoniously signed the purchase of the land. The barracks will be located on Kerkradersteenweg, near GaiaZOO. The arrival of the new barracks will have a positive effect on response times: for Kerkrade they will remain the same, while for Landgraaf an improvement will be achieved.

Alderman Alexander Geers (Real Estate): "We are proud that the fire department will be retained for Kerkrade and that they will soon have a modern, future-proof station. It is a great investment, not only in good housing for our firefighters, but especially in the safety of our residents."

Permit and completion

The current barracks on Hammolenweg no longer meet today's requirements. Therefore, a deliberate decision was made to build a new building. The permit application is expected to be completed this year. If everything goes according to plan, the new barracks will be completed by the end of 2027. The new building will allow our fire department to continue to work quickly, safely and effectively in the future.

One of seven professional barracks

Kerkrade barracks is one of seven professional barracks in South Limburg. Day and night, professionals are on standby to respond immediately to an incident. When they are not working on reports, they perform other essential work.

Kerkrade is home to the Clothing, Connections and Aquifer Service Center. From here, the equipment of all firefighters in South Limburg is managed - from turnout suits to operational uniforms. It also maintains the pagers that alert both firefighters and crisis officials. In addition, cleaning of fire hoses, such as after a wildfire, is provided at this location.

Director Safety Region South Limburg, Fire Department Commander Léon Houben:
"The current barracks no longer meet the requirements of today's and future firefighting services. With the new building, we are creating a modern and practical workplace for our firefighters so that they can perform their duties even better. This will allow us to further strengthen the quality of our fire department in South Limburg."

"Of course, we would also like to be a good neighbor. The first step is to start talking with local residents to include them in the plans for the new barracks. We are happy to listen to their ideas and any concerns. And we take their opinions and wishes into account - wherever possible."

Future-proof and central

With the new barracks in Kerkrade, we are taking an important step towards future-proof firefighting in South Limburg. In this way, residents of Kerkrade and Landgraaf will continue to be assured of prompt, professional assistance, now and in the future.
