Ukrainian refugees in Kerkrade

The war in Ukraine is still going on. We help where we can by hosting refugees in our local community. We do this out of our social and human duty.

The Security Region of South Limburg is working with the 16 municipalities on a regional, coordinated reception of Ukrainian refugees. The municipalities are providing reception locations; the security region is matching supply and demand.

Shelter locations in Kerkrade

Currently, the municipality of Kerkrade is providing medium- and long-term shelter to more than 500 refugees. Nearly 400 people are being housed in a temporary shelter on Hammolenweg. The facility will remain in use until March 2028. Several dozen elderly people from Ukraine are living at the Vroenhof residential care center. In addition, dozens of refugees are staying at other locations in Kerkrade.

Accommodating refugees without asylum permits

Ukrainians who have fled to the Netherlands do not have to apply for asylum in the Netherlands right away. They are allowed to stay here for 90 days without a visa. The Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND for short) is flexible with this period. When necessary, they extend these 90 days to 180 days.

Accommodating refugees with asylum permits

For refugees with an asylum permit (status holders), there is a lodging arrangement. This means that refugees stay with friends, family or a host family during the time they are waiting for housing. They are then entitled to basic services from COA, such as weekly allowance and medical Health.

Important: This is entirely voluntary and a mutual agreement. The municipality pays out the amount to the refugee, but is not a party to the distribution or agreements about it.

What are the Ukrainian refugees getting?

Municipality regulates reception of Ukrainian refugees

This is determined by the State. The costs incurred by the municipality for this are also paid by the State. These include costs for gas, water, light, furnishings and reception facilities. The municipality receives € 315 per refugee per week. This is regulated nationally. Refugees do not have to pay anything themselves for reception.

Ukrainian refugees receive living allowance from state  

There is a national living allowance scheme. Refugees receive a weekly amount to live on. But when the refugee receives income from work, for example, through a new job, he/she no longer receives living allowance.

The municipality does not reimburse medical Health
