Our Waste Heroes - the heroes of the city!

Working in waste collection, cleaning or waste sorting is important work that matters. That's why, during the Week of Waste Heroes (March 4-8), we highlighted those working in the world of waste.

In the Netherlands there are about 30,000 employees who work every day for the collection of waste and raw materials, keeping environmental centres running, transporting our waste or processing and recycling it. In our municipality, the Waste Heroes of Rd4 and our own colleagues from Neighborhood Management together ensure that our city remains clean and livable.

Alderman René van Drunen (Environment and Waste) got a look behind the scenes at Rd4 during the Week of Waste Heroes and took a seat next to driver Mark Smeets on the sweeping truck. And that made an impression: "The work of Waste Heroes always goes on. Day and night, every day of the year. Weather or no weather. We can actually show our appreciation for that every week of the year. Because just imagine if they stopped doing their job. Then it wouldn't take long for it to be a mess everywhere!"
