Transporting the deceased abroad

What is it?

You may transport a deceased person abroad. At customs, you must show some documents. You can request most of these documents from the municipality.

What to do?

You request the documents from the municipality where the person died.

What do I need?

  • proof of cause of death (doctor's or coroner's certificate or prosecutor's certificate)

You will then receive the following documents for transportation of the deceased:

  • death certificate
  • permit for burial or burning (for transport within the Benelux)
  • laissez-passer (for transport outside Benelux)

Additional information

You can also transport a deceased person from abroad to the Netherlands. You will then also need a statement from the competent authority of that country. The Dutch embassy or consulate in that country can help you with this.
