Cable trough tile trial: no private driveway but still charge your electric car at home

How do you charge an electric car at home if you don't have your own driveway? A cable duct from your home to a public parking space in front of your door may be a solution. We are starting a trial to see how this works in practice.

As more and more people switch to an electric car, we are also getting more and more requests from residents without their own driveway who would like an option to charge their car at home. For example, with power from their own solar panels.

Charging electric cars should be easier

Because they are not allowed to lay a charging cable on the sidewalk to a parking space near home, they can now only go to a public charging station. And that should be easier to do.

Alderman René van Drunen (Sustainability): "We would like to see more people driving electric, because this is an important step toward sustainable mobility. As a municipality, we want to promote electric driving by making charging easier and safer."

Cable tray tiles could provide a solution here. These are special concrete tiles with a recess in them, covered by a rubber flap. These tiles will be in the sidewalk between the home and a public parking lot.

Alderman Alexander Geers (Public Space, Traffic and Transportation) said, "We are happy to comply with the request to enable the charging of an electric car in public space with its own electricity. With this trial we are testing a promising way in which the charging cables are safely and neatly concealed in the sidewalk."

We start a one-year trial of cable tray tiles

To see if cable channel tiles are indeed a good solution to make charging electric cars easier and safer, we will start a one-year trial starting September 25.

We will first try out the cable channel tiles at 15 spots in Kerkrade. There are five spots per district. After six months we will see whether we can extend the trial to more locations in the town. After a year, we will assess whether these cableway tiles will be given a permanent place within the options for electric charging in Kerkrade. We will take into account such factors as user-friendliness and any nuisance caused by the tiles.

This is how you can participate
