Rules for school transportation are set to change

The rules for school transportation are changing in our municipality. This brings the rules in line with how school transportation is organized in other municipalities. The changes will take effect in the coming school year. The coming school year will be a transition year for students who already use school transportation.

When will the new rules for student transportation take effect?

The new rules will officially take effect on August 1, 2026. For parents and students who already use school transportation, it is important to know that nothing will change in the coming school year. This is because a transitional arrangement will be in effect for the 2026–2027 school year. This means that the existing rules will remain in effect for another year. However, the changes will take effect for new applications starting in the coming school year.

What exactly is changing?

The new rules offer more opportunities for individualized support for each student. There will also be a greater emphasis on student independence. For example, some students aged 11 and older will receive a personalized transportation plan. 

Another important change in the new regulation is the increase in the distance threshold for school transportation from 2 to 6 kilometers. This means that, in the future, students will only be eligible for school transportation if the distance between their home and school exceeds 6 kilometers. This does not change for students with a permanent disability. 

What should parents and students do?

Parents of students who use school transportation will be personally informed after the summer about what the new rules mean for their situation. In addition, information will be provided through the schools, and an information evening will be organized for the parents concerned.
