Shevemet Leëft: working together for a vibrant neighborhood

In the vibrant neighborhood of Chèvremont, a number of local associations have taken the initiative to work together. Together, they are making a case for the survival of the associations and want to revitalize club life. This initiative, known as "Sjevemet Leëft," is an inspiring example of how citizens, with a little help from the municipality, strengthen and connect the community.

Born at the bar

Ben Paulissen, one of the initiators of "Sjevemet Leëft," explains how the idea came about: "The idea for 'Sjevemet Leëft' actually came from conversations at the bar. We realized that many associations were struggling with a decline in members. We realized that by working together, we could offer a much broader and more attractive presentation to potential new members."

There was some reluctance at first, but the benefits of cooperation soon became clear. There are now 12 associations involved in the initiative, ranging from the soccer club to the militia, acolytes and brass band.

Together strong for the future

The goal of "Sjevemet Leëft" is to lower the threshold for joining an association. At events, the associations present themselves together. Residents of Chèvremont can then learn about various activities in an informal setting. "Association life is for young and old," Ben Paulissen emphasizes. "We want to show that there is something for everyone, whether you want to sing, shoot, dance or participate in a card club."

The first edition of the event was a great success and attracted a lot of interest. The positive experiences of the participants have made even more associations eager to participate. This shows that working together really pays off and benefits the community.

The role of the municipality of Kerkrade

John Engelen, area director at the municipality of Kerkrade, speaks highly of Sjevemet Leëft: "This is a super initiative. As a municipality, we applaud these kinds of initiatives, especially when the proposal to do something comes from the residents themselves. We support this whenever possible. For Sjevemet Leëft, we facilitate accommodations, provide materials and promote the event through banners and social media."

The municipality provides extensive support to ensure the success of such initiatives. "We make sure everything is compliant and help with permit applications and logistics," John explains. This support is crucial to the success of "Shevemet Leëft" and similar projects.

Impact on the community

"Sjevemet Leëft" has revitalized club life in Chèvremont. AND it has contributed to social cohesion in the neighborhood. The event provides a platform where young and old, newcomers and established residents, can meet and engage in activities together. This also helps combat loneliness and promote inclusiveness.
