Questions about voting

What election will take place on June 6, 2024?

European Parliament elections will take place on June 6, 2024. The election of members of the European Parliament is held once every 5 years. There is no uniform election procedure for the European Parliament within Europe. Also, voting does not take place on the same day in all member states.

Where can I vote?

Within what times can I vote?

On Thursday, June 6, our polling places will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

How does voting in elections work?

  • At least 2 weeks before the election, you will receive your voting card.
  • Bring your voting card and a valid ID to the polling station.
  • At the polling station, turn in your voting card. Also show your ID to the polling station member.
  • At the polling station, you will be given a ballot paper. This lists all the lists (parties) participating in the election. It also lists all the candidates for whom you can vote.
  • Take the ballot into the voting booth. The vote is secret. The voting booths in the polling place are positioned so that no one can see who you are voting for. Only people with physical disabilities may be assisted in the voting booth.
  • Using a red pencil, color the circle in front of the name of the person you want to vote for.
  • You can also leave the ballot blank. This is called blank voting.
  • Fold the ballot so that no one can see your choice.
  • After this, put the ballot in the ballot box.

Blank votes

Don't want to elect a candidate but still want to use your right to vote? Then you can cast a blank vote. You go to the polling booth, but do not elect a candidate. So you do not fill in anything on the ballot paper.

Your blank vote does not affect the distribution of seats. Thus, a blank vote or a vote not cast does not go to the largest party. A blank vote does count in determining the turnout of the election.

Misspelled ballot or mistake

When voting, you can choose one candidate per ballot paper by coloring the corresponding box red. If you color multiple boxes or draw or color anything on the ballot paper, your ballot paper is invalid. Your vote will only count towards the voter turnout. Did you accidentally invalidate your ballot paper or make a mistake? Then you may ask for a new ballot paper once.

What should I bring with me when I vote?

You bring:

  • Your voting card;
  • A proof of identity: this may be a passport, identity card or driver's license from the Netherlands;
  • Are you casting a proxy vote? If so, please also bring the voting card and a copy of the proxy's ID.

Your ID is valid to vote if it has not expired more than 5 years on the day of the election.

I lost my ID or it was stolen. What should I do?

If you have lost your identification document or it has been stolen, you can report to the polling station with the report of loss or theft prepared by the municipality and another document that shows your name and a photo of you.

What IDs can I vote with?

To vote, you need a voting pass and proof of identity. You can bring one of these IDs with you:

  • Passport;
  • Id;
  • Driving license from the Netherlands;
  • A valid residency document (for water board elections only).

Voters with dual nationality may also identify themselves with a passport, identity card or driver's license from an EEA country or a passport or identity card from Switzerland. For water board elections, you may also identify yourself with a foreign national document.

How many proxies may I submit?

You may, at the same time as your own vote, cast a maximum of 2 proxy votes.

The initiative to grant a proxy lies with the voter, and not with his proxy. Recruiting proxy votes is prohibited. Nor may a person bribe a voter with a gift, promise or otherwise force the voter to give a proxy.

Can I vote in another municipality?

Yes. A voter who cannot or does not wish to vote in his or her own municipality on election day may request to cast his or her vote in another municipality. To do so, he or she must apply for a voter ID card.

How can I get someone else to vote for me?

You will find all information related to voter authorization on the Request a Replacement Voting Pass or Proxy page.

I've moved. Now what?

The address where you are registered in the Basic Registration of PersonsBRP) on 9 October 2023 is the address where we will have the voting pass delivered no later than 8 November 2023. If you move between October 9, 2023 and November 22, 2023, you can tell Post NL to forward the mail intended for you to your new address.

Please note! You can only vote in the municipality where you were registered in the BRP on October 9, 2023.

Questions about the voting pass

What is a voting pass?

A voting pass is proof that you may cast your vote in the elections. To cast your vote, you must show your ID in addition to the voting card.

The polling card does not pre-print which polling place is closest to your home address. We do this because it can be uncertain until the last minute whether a polling station will be open. For example, because there is a corona outbreak in the building where we place a polling station. Or because of too many sick people among the polling officials so the session cannot go ahead.

When will I receive my voting card?

To vote, you will receive a voting pass no later than November 8, 2023. The voting card shows that you may vote. Without the voting pass, you cannot cast your vote.

What should I do if I lost my voting card or did not receive one?

On the Replacement Voting Pass or Proxy page you will find all information related to requesting a new or replacement voting pass.

Questions about the polling station

Can my child join me in the voting booth?

In principle, no, because only one person at a time is allowed in a voting booth due to the secrecy of the vote. If it is clear that there can be absolutely no question of any influence on a voter, for example a parent with a 3-year-old child, this voter can request permission for this from the chairman of the polling station.

May I bring my own pencil to the polling place?

Yes, you may. The pencil or pen must be red writing. Red voting pencils are also handed out at the polling station.

What is provided for people with disabilities?

General information about voters with disabilities can be found in the Rijksoverheids infographic: What is provided for you at the polling place?

In the polling place you will find, among other things, a candidate list in large print and a magnifying glass with lights. For people in wheelchairs, there is at least one voting booth with a lowered writing surface.

At the polling place, a poll worker may explain to you how to use the ballot paper. Do you need help voting because of your physical disability? Then someone may accompany you into the voting booth to help you.

Additional accessible polling places

This page www.waarismijnstemlokaal.nl shows which polling places are extra accessible for people with low vision or wheelchairs, for example.

Help for voters with physical disabilities

Are you unable to vote yourself due to a physical disability? Then you may get help in the voting booth. For example, if you are visually impaired, blind or have Parkinson's disease. You can bring someone along to help, or ask a polling station member for help.

Voting with a visual impairment

An enlarged list of candidates hangs in all polling stations. In addition, at least one magnifying glass must be present, which enlarges the text on the ballot paper. There must also be good lighting in the voting booth.
