Residence permit applications

What is it?

You need a residence permit if you want to stay in the Netherlands for more than 3 months. For example, if you want to live with your family in the Netherlands. Or if you want to work or study in the Netherlands.

Residents of EU/EEA countries and people from Switzerland who (want to) stay in the Netherlands do not need a residence permit.

What to do?

For more information, contact the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND). You can contact an IND office in your area or you can call: 088-0430430

How does it work?

Opportunities and Requirements include:

  • Do you want to visit the Netherlands for less than 3 months? Then you need a valid travel document (e.g. a passport) and in many cases a visa. Residents of the EU-EEA countries and people from Switzerland need only their passport or identity card.
  • Do you want to stay in the Netherlands for more than 3 months and do not belong to the group mentioned above? Then you will always need a residence permit. In addition, in most cases you will need a special visa to enter the Netherlands. That visa is called a provisional residence permit (MVV).

What should I bring?

To apply for a residence permit, you need:

  • your valid proof of identity (your travel document or other document containing your nationality)
  • if you were born abroad: a birth certificate (depending on your country of birth, the certificate must be legalized)
  • if you are married: your marriage certificate
  • if you were married: the divorce certificate, or death certificate of your deceased partner

The IND sometimes also asks for proof that you have a home in the Netherlands. This proof can be:

  • a lease, or
  • property deed, or
  • A statement from the principal occupant of the property
