Reporting lost or found items

What is it?

  • If you have lost or found something, you can report it to the municipality. You do not have to report it to the police.
  • Note: You do need to report it to the police if you think it is theft.

What to do?

  • You report the lost or found object to the municipality. You can also report it at www.verlorenofgevonden.nl.
  • After the report, you can choose to keep the found object yourself. You will then receive a call from the municipality when the owner has come forward.
  • You can also deposit the found object with the municipality for safekeeping. Then ask for proof of this.
  • If the municipality thinks it has found your lost item, you will receive a call.

Report of theft

Always go to the police to report a stolen item. You can do so in person at the police station, but often online as well.

Becoming the owner of a found object

When you file the report, you can indicate that you want to become the owner of the found object. If the owner does not pick up the item within one year, you are the owner of the item.

If you have given the object for safekeeping to the municipality, you can only become the owner if the object is worth more than €450. If the owner does not collect the object within one year, you must report to the municipality within one month after that year.
