Akerstraat Redevelopment

This is an old post.

During a meeting on Akerstraat, Alderman , Alexander Geers (Housing and Public Housing), and John Nievelstein of Nivas Carboon Project B.V. signed a partnership agreement for the redevelopment of Akerstraat 24 through 32a. The buildings on Akerstraat will be demolished to make way for a new and sustainable development right next to Carboonplein.

An apartment complex with 46 units will be built at this location. It will include social housing, mid-range rental units, and owner-occupied homes. A small retail space will be located on the ground floor.

Alexander Geers (Housing and Public Housing): “With these new homes, we’re giving more people a great place to live in Kerkrade. The retail space on the ground floor complements the amenities and vibrancy of Carboonplein perfectly. This is how we’re working together to build a neighborhood that continues to grow and thrive.”

The buildings on Akerstraat currently still house several stores, and there are a few rental units above the stores. The municipality of Kerkrade and Nivas are aware that these tenants still live and work there. That is why we are currently in discussions with all tenants. Together, we are looking for a suitable solution. The existing lease agreements remain in full force.

The results of these discussions and the next steps in the project will determine when work can begin.
