Grant for green roofs and facades

Green roofs and facades are roofs and walls that are covered with plants. This not only looks beautiful, but also has many other benefits. For example, they provide more greenery in the city, improve air quality and help store rainwater. They also improve the insulation of buildings, which means you need to use less energy.

Municipality of Kerkrade provides grants to homeowners or tenants to install a green roof or green facade. With this we want to:

  • reduce flooding;
  • save energy and emit less carbon dioxide (CO2);
  • retain particulate matter and nitrogen;
  • reducing noise pollution;
  • make the city less hot;
  • and attract more species of plants and animals (increasing biodiversity).

How do I apply for a grant?

You apply for funding by completing the digital application form Incentive Scheme Green Roofs and Green Facades. 

You can do this with DigiD, but you can also do it without DigiD. 

Can't fill out the application form digitally? Then you can pick up a form at the City Office desk and send it by mail to Postbus 600 6460 AP Kerkrade.

What are the Requirements?

To qualify for the grant program, you must meet a number of Requirements . These are:

  • You are the owner or user of the property.
  • The minimum roof area is 10m2 for a home and 50m2 for a commercial building.
  • The minimum area for green facades is 5m2 for a home and 10m2 for a commercial building.
  • The construction of the green roof must meet the minimum water storage of 25 liters perm2 for an extensive green roof and 50 liters perm2 for an intensive green roof.
  • Construction of green roofs and façade gardens may require an environmental permit.
  • Once constructed, you must maintain facilities for a minimum of 5 years.

What happens after the grant application?

After you send the application form to us (by e-mail or post), the procedure is as follows: 

  1. We will contact you by phone to set up an appointment at your home / business.
  2. We review your application.
  3. We will make a decision on your application. 

Has your application been approved? And do you want to proceed with the subsidy scheme? Then the procedure follows as follows:

  1. You are taking advantage of the subsidy scheme.
  2. You perform the work yourself or have it performed.
  3. Your delivery details are checked by us.
  4. You will receive the grant.
  5. Optionally, we perform a home inspection.

Important to know

Below we list a few points to consider:

  • Do you live in a rental property? Consult with the landlord first if you want to install a green roof, green wall or vertical garden;
  • To qualify for the grant, you may not begin until your application is approved;
  • The amount of the subsidy depends on the method and size of the facility to be constructed (green roof, green facade and vertical garden).
  • You may not construct green roofs or green facades until your grant application is approved. Work must start within 6 months of grant approval and be completed within 1 year.
