Heat

When it gets hot, we need to take good care of ourselves and each other. This is how we keep summer fun and healthy.

In recent years, very hot days and heat waves have become increasingly common. Not only in summer, but also earlier and later in the year. In 2023, for example, Kerkrade experienced three regional heat waves.

Warm days can be nice, but not everyone can handle them well. Days and nights with (very) high temperatures can cause health problems in young children, the elderly, the chronically ill and overweight people. Heat can cause mild symptoms, such as sleeping badly, being tired and itching. But it can also cause severe symptoms that kill people.

We want summer to be and stay fun for everyone. You can do a lot yourself to avoid suffering from the heat. For example, by greening your garden and installing good sun protection. It is also important to take good care of yourself and those around you during the heat.

Keep your cool and summer fun!

In order to warn everyone in time when a period of hot weather is approaching, the Municipality of Kerkrade created a local heat plan. We did this together with GGD Zuid-Limburg, the Red Cross, partners from Health, welfare and volunteer work in Kerkrade.

The heat plan aims to inform residents, institutions, caregivers and volunteers in time about an approaching heat period. In this way, residents and caregivers can take measures to prevent or reduce health risks caused by heat in themselves and each other. And everyone in Kerkrade can optimally enjoy the summer and the weather.
